Description:

Why did people come to the United States? From 1609 to the present, you can find the answer to that question. You can also learn who has immigrated and how they arrived at the United States. Divided into four time periods, you can compare immigrants from the 1600's to those of the 1800's and 1900's.

This Web page grew out of a project for a 10th grade American History class. It has blossomed into a well-made Web site.

Note: This is a graphics-intensive site and may take a while to load. There is a text only version which is faster to load.

How You Can Use This Source:

  • Read about how immigrants have been treated through the years, and about their effects on the country.
  • Find peaks of immigration activity. Do they coincide with any events?
  • Follow a link to Ellis Island, the first stop for people immigrating to the United States.
