The Macrogalleria

Subject Area:

Science

Address/URL:

Description:

Your clothing is made of them. Your computer, tennis racket, and books are too. These items are all made of polymers. Polymers are extremely large molecules, or macromolecules. You can learn all about them at the Macrogalleria - a mall designed for polymer study. Start on the first floor where you see a sampling of things made with polymers, then move up to higher levels of the galleria for more detailed information on polymer chemistry.

Follow the link for students and teachers for ideas on how to use this site.

Note: There are some great 3-dimensional graphics of polymers in the galleria. You will need a plug-in application for your Web browser. Click on the 'Chime now' button at the top of the first screen to download the appropriate plug-in.

How You Can Use This Source:

  • Find out which items you use every day are made of polymers and view 3-dimensional images of these polymers.
  • Discover how polymers are formed and how they work. The authors of this site give easy-to-understand explanations. Try the 'A little introduction' store on the third floor for a basic overview of polymer chemistry.
