Description:

Elementary schools from around the world participate in this fairy tale dictionary project. Classes choose a fairytale or folktale and create an illustrated dictionary with words from the story. Each dictionary entry contains an illustration and the word highlighted in a sentence taken from the story. The online version of the story is the sum of the sentences/paragraphs from the dictionary. Reading the story from a book and then comparing it to the version online could be a good introductory or follow-up activity.

How You Can Use This Source:

Learn new vocabulary, practice your alphabet, and reinforce letter recognition by reading a story and looking up words in the related picture dictionary.
Talk about the pictures in the dictionaries and discuss how well they illustrate the meaning of the word.
Develop your own fairytale dictionary and send it on to the project for internet publication.
