Description:

Elementary schools from around the world participate in this fairy tale dictionary project. Classes choose a fairytale or folktale and create an illustrated dictionary with words from the story. Each dictionary entry contains an illustration and the word highlighted in a sentence taken from the story. The online version of the story is the sum of the sentences/paragraphs from the dictionary. Reading the story from a book and then comparing it to the version online could be a good introductory or follow-up activity.

How You Can Use This Source:

  • Learn new vocabulary, practice your alphabet, and reinforce letter recognition by reading a story and looking up words in the related picture dictionary.
  • Talk about the pictures in the dictionaries and discuss how well they illustrate the meaning of the word.
  • Develop your own fairytale dictionary and send it on to the project for internet publication.
